Facebook has introduced new features for fans to interact with the World Cup on its platform. They include a new experience called Trending World Cup and a character called “The Ref” that the network launched two days ago.

Trending World Cup is  a dedicated hub for fans on Facebook to follow the tournament as it unfolds. It features the latest scores and highlights from the matches, a special feed with real-time posts from friends and updates from relevant players and teams, and an interactive map that shows where fans of some of the top players are located around the world.

In addition, starting tomorrow, fans can share the specific match they are watching during the World Cup, by tapping on the smiley icon before they share a post and selecting “watching.”

Over the course of the tournament, fans can find Trending World Cup by visiting www.facebook.com/worldcup, and if they are in the US, UK, India, Canada, or Australia, they can also get there by clicking on “World Cup” in the Trending section on the right-hand side of their News Feed. If fans’ friends share that they are watching a specific match, they can also get to Trending World Cup by clicking on the match in their post.

Also, within Trending World Cup, they might hear from The Ref — Facebook’s ‘official’ official of the tournament (www.facebook.com/FacebookRef) for colorful commentary and updates about the matches.
