The advertising industry is great for hard-working, career-minded women as they can put their skills and creativity into practice. However, too often women think that working hard is their only way to get that raise or promotion or job they’ve always dreamed of. It’s not a false assumption, but young women need a more sophisticated approach to drive their career forward. Here are some tips to boost your female power at work.
1. Don’t wait for things to happen… Make them happen
Proactivity is the way to impress. Employers like staff who can add value to the business, not just tick the boxes of their day-to-day job. You need to get on with the work you’ve been set, but if you have a new idea or see a way of improving things, go ahead and spell it out. Come up with suggestions and always challenge the status quo. Likewise, grab any interesting challenges that come your way, even if they mean extra work or taking on a project that’s outside your comfort zone. Remember, everything is possible if you set your mind to it. Just do it.
2. Think like a lady, act like one too
There’s no need to pretend to be a man, or try to dress or talk or act like one. Your own personality is what will get you ahead. Be your best self, not someone else. Never lose your own identity and use your strengths. Women do operate in a different way; they have empathy, intuition, understanding and compassion, and great listening skills – use these to your advantage. Aside from the right qualifications, a recent study by Bayt.com on first jobs for women in the Middle East has revealed that employers are mostly looking for young women who are smart and hard-working, but also, those who are honest, team players and confident.
3. Know your rights
There is an information gap between young women and employers when it comes to women’s rights and benefits: women are significantly less likely than employers to be aware of the existence of policies and benefits that encourage female employment in their country. Research those policies, as they may vary from one country to another, and discover your rights when it comes to wages, maternity leaves, health coverage for you and your family, and more.
4. Keep an updated portfolio of your work
Often young women get distracted or overworked and forget to keep a portfolio of their work. It’s imperative to have this handy at all times, especially if you are looking for a job in the creative industry. Make sure you save everything you have ever written, made and designed. Companies look for people who can bring in a fresh perspective so make sure your portfolio is always up-to-date. Another great way to display your portfolio is by creating an online profile and your own website where employers can view your work and download your CV. Here’s a handy infographic:
